Sports Card Investing

Sports Card Investing

It’s the year 2021 and sports card investing is a HUGE THING right now. Actually, it has been – obviously – for a couple years, but this year is truly looking to be big in terms of playing the trading card game like the stock market. I’ve never been much into “investing” in cards, or into flipping, as I’ve always been into the pure hobby and I sell really just to move cards I don’t want in order to buy ones I do want. That said, I’ve been looking more and more into tips and techniques in investing in cards, and I gotta say, I’m pretty intrigued. It seems fun! And, if done smart, it seems profitable!

I’ve decided to start this year off by getting into the trading card investing game. Mostly just to see if I like it and if it seems worthwhile as a side-strategy for funding my card collection. Or just as a new way to be involved in the hobby. I’m hoping to document my card investment journey here!

Buying and selling sports cards on eBay

Still the main source of collecting, I’ll certainly be watching select cards and looking for the right “buy now” opportunities. Obviously, eBay is the way to go when figuring out how much a card is “worth” – i.e., how much money it is currently selling for. And keeping close track this way will help me figure out when a card is investment worthy and time to buy it. So far, I’ve picked up one card on eBay that I BELIEVE to be a great investment. Only time will tell. 2019/20 Panini Prizm basketball Bol Bol rookie #282 PSA10. After taxes and shipping, I picked this card up for $124. At some point this season, I very much expect the Nuggets to get him involved, and I see this card making a sizeable jump. The card has actually been going down for a few months since the initial Bol hype, and I think that’s a good thing. Buy low. Sell high(er).

Star Stock

Ok, Star Stock seems cool. Buying and selling sports cards like stocks. I’ve only JUST started looking into it. I haven’t yet deposited any funds and haven’t actually “traded” on it yet, BUT, I plan to. I’ll update here when I have more to say.

Check Out My Cards (COMC)

I’ve been on COMC since pretty much it’s inception, but have never done TOO much on it. I’ve liked the model, generally, but never really got into it so much. I have a small bankroll on COMC right now and am going to see if I can start small and invest my way up for bit.

Hopeful flips from COMC:

+ Juan Soto 2018 Topps Heritage high number base #502

+ Anthony Rendon 2013 Topps Update base rookie #US8

Private Deals

Ok, I’m not sure how many details I’ll divulge here, but I think there’s a LOT of opportunity to snag great cards, at good deals, via private deals. Whether in person, at local card shops (LCS), or my personal favorite, in Facebook groups. I’ve already acquired a lot of cards this way that I know are “quick flips”, where I can at least double my money per card. Starting to move those now, so I’ll update as I go along with how well this works.
