Moonshiner, Author, and Folk Hero
Popcorn Sutton was a legendary moonshiner from North Carolina who gained a cult following for his homemade liquor and rebellious spirit. He wrote the book “Me and My Likker,” which became a bestseller and helped to cement his status as a folk hero. Sutton ran afoul of the law several times and was arrested for moonshining and related offenses. In March 2008, Sutton told an undercover federal officer that he had 500 gallons of moonshine in Tennessee and another 400 gallons in Maggie Valley that he was ready to sell. This led to a raid of his property by the ATF. He committed suicide in 2009 rather than serve a prison sentence.
