Larry Flynt was an American publisher, businessman, and free-speech activist best known as the founder of Hustler Magazine, a controversial adult publication launched in 1974. Flynt’s career was marked by legal battles over obscenity and first amendment rights, culminating in a landmark 1988 Supreme Court victory in Hustler Magazine, Inc. V. Falwall, which protected satire and free speech, despite being paralyzed from the waist down following a 1978 assassination attempt. Flynt remained a vocal advocate for civil liberties and expanded his publishing empire, which included adult entertainment and casinos. His provocative and unapologetic approach to both business and free speech made him a polarizing figure in American culture.
