Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, a transient nomad, gained notoriety in 2013 after intervening in an altercation in California, during which he struck a man with a hatchet, ultimately saving the life of the victim. He became known as “Kai The Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker” due to a viral video interview with a local news station following the incident. He later faced charges for the murder of a New Jersey lawyer, which he pleaded not guilty to, claiming he was drugged and sexually assaulted. He was found guilty of murder in 2016, but continues to appeal his case.
