Oscar F. Mayer emigrated to the United States from Germany, and in 1883, at 24 years of age he started a butcher and sausage-making shop with his brothers in Chicago. In 1904, the company started using its own brand on its products and was one of the earliest participants in the Food Safety and Inspection Service. By the time of his death, Oscar Mayer had grown to 9,000 employees, with facilities across the nation.
