Bayard Rustin (1912-1987) was a pivotal figure in the American civil rights movement, born in West Chester, Pennsylvania. An advocate for racial equality and economic justice, Rustin played a crucial role in organizing the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Despite facing discrimination due to his sexuality, he emphasized nonviolent resistance and drew inspiration from Gandhi’s philosophy. Rustin’s contributions to the movement were significant, though often overlooked due to societal attitudes toward his sexuality. Posthumously, in 2013, President Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, recognizing his tireless dedication to equality and justice.
