John Cromwell Mather is a senior astrophysicist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. He is best known for his work on the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite, which measured the temperature of the cosmic microwave background radiation, the afterglow of the Big Bang. Mather’s measurements provided strong evidence for the Big Bang theory and helped establish the study of cosmology as a precision science. In 2006, Mather was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for this work. Mather is also the senior project scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope – launched on December 25, 2021 – the largest and most powerful space telescope ever built. Mather received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley and has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the field of astrophysics.
